Nature Walk and Peat Cutting

Nature Walk and Peat Cutting

On the farm ice age sand and gravel deposits lie alongside peat soils on blanket and raised bogs forming different habitats and wildlife within a short walking distance from each other. Enjoy a leisurely guided walk farm tracks by the ponds and to the peat bog.  Watch the sheep dogs at work gathering the sheep into the pens.

Have a go at traditional turf cutting in the peat bog. Using the turf spade slice the peat and throw it up onto the bank for drying.

See the wildlife around the farm and ponds. The peat rich soils provide ideal conditions for some of our rarest and interesting plants and animals. Learn about peat. How and why it has been used as a fuel source in Ireland.
